IndieGurrl Cosmetics

Hello Readers and fellow bloggers, I know it's been some time. Welcome back.

I have something really special to blog about today. A friend and an amazing business woman's shop. It's called IndieGurrl Cosmetics.

She sells all kinds of items from Blushes and Bronzers to Lip glosses and Face Moisturizers. Not only is everything fairly priced, but the sizes are very generous. You really get alot of product for your money. She also likes to throw in free samples of items coming out, giving the customer new items to try or share with a friend.

My personal favorite item is her Powder Foundation/Finishing Veil called "You Glow Gurrl Perfecting Powder - in Sweet Cream"

How to apply:
I usually start with a liquid foundation, apply it all over my face and then lightly dust my face with You Glow Gurrl, or if there are days where I don't feel like applying my makeup, but I want something on my face I will just lightly apply some all over. It gives it a soft and even toned look.

Now if Sweet Cream isn't dark enough for you, I recommend buying

"You Glow Gurrl Perfecting Powder in Caramel" for Medium toned skin or

"You Glow Gurrl Perfecting Powder in Hot Cocoa" for Darker toned skin.

Right now she has a sale going on, $1 samples and if you buy 5 you get a free sample. Now that's not all, it's also free shipping. So what's not a better reason to go and check her out, tell your friends and place an order. I personally love samples so I can sort of get a feel for what the seller's products are like. I bought 1 sample of everything, that way I know what to buy on my next order. :)

You can either check her out on Facebook:
http://www.facebook.com/indiegurrlcosmetics?sk=app_135607783795
or
You can check her shop out on Etsy:

Also she has a fanpage on Facebook, make sure you stop by and like it for updates, new items and contests and giveaways.

Now, as you know with all of my review-ies I like to do a little Q&A for you to get a little sense from who you are buying, this is what Chrissie had to say:

What is the link and name for your shop/Etsy account:
www.etsy.com/shop/indiegurrlcosmetics

Could you please explain a little about yourself and include any messages you would like to add?:
My name is Chrissie :) I am a full time student and a mom of 2 kids. I grew up watching my mom do her makeup, and I picked up on it pretty quick. Over the years I have developed an obsession with all things beauty. When I turned 20 years old, my face started flipping out on me and I spent 5 years searching for products that would help my skin stay clear. After playing around, indiegurrl cosmetics was born! So here I am, creating products for other people who have struggled with my same situations... I plan on changing lives one face at a time <3

How long have you been in business for? :
4 months!

What type of products do you sell? :
I have perfecting powder, bronzers, blushes, lip gloss, face wash, and body/face mud :)

Compared to other sellers, what do you think personally makes you stand out? :
My entire goal is to create products that not only make you look beautiful but make you *feel* beautiful. Sure, you can throw on a face full of makeup, but after that makeup comes off, do you still feel gorgeous? This is my main goal... I want to help your skin be the best in the world. This is where I differ from any other company.

When did you first realize you wanted to sell products? :
I had played with the idea last summer because I saw so many people were making eye pigments. After being burned by another independent cosmetics company, I figured it was time to make my own cosmetics. But, I didn't want to hop the train and make eye colors. Where was a shop that catered to my hormonal face? I found some with wash, some with scrub, some with powders, some with acne remedies... but I did not see one shop that has it all. So I decided to be THAT store. I started out with simple, all vegan face wash and it took off from there. From the moment I heard raving reviews about my face wash, I decided that this really was what I wanted to do.

How did you first get started? And was it an easy start or difficult? :
I did research for at least 6 months, bookmarked sites, and when my student loan money came in I invested $600 into supplies, labels, containers, sanitary items, organizational items, etc and when my items got to my house, I started in on experimenting with different combinations of minerals to create the perfect powders and formulations. It was surprisingly easy, but that's partly due to me being shut in the office for hours on end, becoming absorbed into my one true love: makeup!

What advice would you offer to a seller who is looking to or just getting started? :
It aint cheap, honey! You must make sure all loose ends are tied up before you go opening a shop. I made the mistake of trying to make my own labels and it turned into a disaster. I ended up going through Goathead Co. for my label needs... and it delayed product shipment. I love my labels now and this is one thing I will never forget to reorder. Also, presentation is everything. Adding a small touch, like colored bubble wrap, ribbon, or a hand written note makes all the difference in the world.

What is the best thing about your fans? :
The best thing about my fans is that they are all my friends. I feel like I don't have to hold anything back when I communicate with them. If I am having an issue, I don't hesitate to lay it out. "Hey, I have the shits, I can't get your package out til tomorrow".... I don't make excuses for my mistakes. I can be upfront and tell the truth and my girls take me as I am.... even with my flaws haha

What would you say if you could say one thing personally to your fans? :
If I won the lottery I would fly all my fans out to my neck of the woods and have them come in and create custom colors! Dude, that would be so awesome.... giving my girls exactly what they want... but sadly I doubt that will happen so I have to try and do that all by my lonesome.

Could you tell us what is in store for your shop in the near future? Do you have any sales or specials coming soon? :
Every Friday I change up the Color of the Week and knock a few bucks off one of the products. I am CONSTANTLY giving things away. You would think this girl would be run into the poor house with all the giveaways but I can't help it: I love sharing! I list coupons codes and specials a lot on the Facebook fan page, so go fan it to get in on all the action! In the future I will be doing twistable primer pencils, lip stain, tattoo salve, eyebrow powder kit.... aaahhh the list goes on and on!

<3

I just want to personally take the time to Thank Chrissie and IndieGurrl Cosmetics for takingthe time to answer these questions and also for doing me the pleasure of having them on the blog. My only hope is that with this review you will spread the word, take a look at her shop and help her grow her business as a seller. I really hope you ladies enjoyed everything, and I'm sure Chrissie will be excited to see your orders. :) Thank you all, Have a great night

Love Always, Obsessive Compulsive Blogger. <3

(Would you ever buy from IndieGurrl Cosmetics again? : Yes, I would!)
(Would you recommend them to your friends?: I would!!)
(How do you rate you overall expirence?: 15/10)

Unique Pigments & Cosmetics

Hello Readers, Welcome back!

Today I want to talk to you about a brand new indie makeup company called "Unique Pigments" ran by my friend Zhen.
Slowly over the past few months she has expanded the size of her shop and has alot to offer for you buyers out there.

Being a new seller, I always like to get a sample package sent first to sort of "Test" of the makeup. Everything that I recieved not only came packaged neatly and pretty freakin' adorable, but was professional and really a great product to use.

I slowly over the months have placed a few orders. Everything getting better each time I recieved it. She has a great sense of what she is doing, and a great sense of what customers are looking for packaging wise and product wise.

I ordered for my review samples (Which come in clamshells) of her newest collections "Spring Fling" and "My Little Pony." I have to say I was stunned with how these colors popped. I did some swatches so you could see what the colors turned out like. I have to say these are probably my new 2 favorite collections. Spring Fling being Matte for those days you don't feel like a lot of sparkle and My Little Pony, really popping out with glitz and glam. Makeup I'd use for a night out or a special occasion. It's nice to have versatility. Also, not to mention I love how easily the colors apply, it's like smooth butter.... effortless. I really love mineral makeup that you don't need to build up to apply.

All swatches are applied WET for a foiled look:

Now, as you know with all of my review-ies I like to do a little Q&A for you to get a little sense from who you are buying, this is what Zhen had to say:

What is the link and name for your shop/Etsy account:

Could you please explain a little about yourself and include any messages you would like to add?: I consider my makeup business a self sustaining hobby & would like to keep it that way. I'm not looking to make it big or get rich, just share my creations with friends & fans enough to help finance exciting new items! How long have you been in business for? :
3 months

What type of products do you sell? :
Loose mineral eyeshadow.

When did you first realize you wanted to sell products? :
December of 2010.

How did you first get started? And was it an easy start or difficult? :
I began making my own eyeshadow in october of 2010. My eyes had become very sensitive & I decided it would be best if I made my own so I knew exactly what was going on my face. I love sharing my makeup looks & friends became interested in what I was making so I began sharing with them & it just kind of went from there!

What advice would you offer to a seller who is looking to or just getting started? :
Research! Lots of it. I spent months reading and researching before even starting playing with my own recipes & formulas. Also, make sure to save up at LEAST $500 to get started.

What is the best thing about your fans? :
Just one thing?! Not sure I could pick just one thing... My fans are incredibly sweet, incredibly talented & very beautiful. And they are always so excited when I do new colors, keeps me passionate about what I do!

What would you say if you could say one thing personally to your fans? :
THANK YOU!! You guys keep me inspired and keep me strong!

Could you tell us what is in store for your shop in the near future? Do you have any sales or specials coming soon?:
We have our website launching this month!! New collections are in the works as well as Mineral Makeup Starter Kits! They will include 4 shades of your choice, 3 brushes, a base, a compact mirror all in a pretty satchel perfect forgift giving or getting started with loose mineral makeup!

Rock A Betty Beauty

Welcome back all, yet again another cosmetic review for the make up fiends.

As most of you on my facebook page know, I am involved in a group called MMUL Part Duex (Mineral Makeup Lovers) and I have met some pretty amazing women on there. Some whom I can call my friends. But one cool thing about the group is some of the women personally sell pigments and have their own companies. This is where I can across Kimberly or as her friends/fans call her "Ber." She is a beautiful, talented woman. Whom I am excited I got the pleasure to meet.

She runs her own business through facebook and Etsy, called Rock A Betty Beauty. She offers high quality and bright colored pigments. :) I actually inquired her with interest to have her in my blog. :) She happily agreed.

I went ahead and ordered the Blogger Sampler which is 5 "Lid Lusters" (shadows) and a "Pinup Powder" for $2.25 plus shipping, which is a pretty freaking amazing deal! I was quite impressed with the packaging, the colors and the overall application. Everything came quick and neatly packaged. I was quite impressed. :)

Packaging is neat and very cute, love the popcorn style bag. :)

I love how bright and vibrant all the colors are.

Even came with a mini brush to apply your makeup. :) Cute business cards too.

I was most impressed with how easy the colors went on, the color really stayed. No glitter fallout and the colors really POPPED! :)

All colors are swatched WET over Madd Style's "Awesome Sauce" eye primer.

Beautiful and vibrant colors, easy application with little to no effort.

I really love all the names she uses for her pigments. :) Very cute.

Now I love for people to have the chance of getting to know the seller on a personal level before making decisions, so I asked Kimberly to fill out a Q&A about herself and her company, which is regular here on OCB :) Please take the time to read, and I hope it persuades you in the right direction.

Here is what Rock a Betty Beauty had to say:

What is the link and name for your shop/Etsy account:

RockABetty Beauty
http://www.RockABettyBeauty.Etsy.com

Could you please explain a little about yourself and include any messages you would like to add?:

My name is Kimberly, but most of you know me as Ber. I am 28 and have a healthy obsession for make up and all things fabulous. If you had asked me 10 years ago what I would be doing at 28, I never could have imagined this, but what an amazing journey it has been to get to this point in my life. I have had a love of the arts since I was a child, and always knew that I would do something 'creative' as an adult, I just didn't know what it would be. In 8th grade I earned a scholarship to a local art school and ended up taking a semester of college art classes the summer before my freshman year. After high school I had dreams of becoming a foreign war correspondent and went to school for a degree in Journalism. But life had other plans for me. I ended up getting married and having 4 beautiful, amazing children, and I just could not justify the risk involved with that line of work. But even after that, I could not stop being creative, so to speak. I taught Color Guard, I started a jewelry line, I taught myself 'fashion design' and made dresses and bags, all of this leading up to the day I decided to start making my own makeup, and that's what I have been doing ever since.

How long have you been in business for? :

I officially opened for (online) business in February 2010, but spent the better part of 2009 educating myself on all aspects of cosmetic creation, as well as product development and testing, etc

What type of products do you sell? :

I sell make up and beauty products, mostly consisting of loose eye shadows, blush, and finishing powders, scented body products, and beauty 'helpers,' but I am always working to add more to my line.

Compared to other sellers, what do you think personally makes you stand out? :

I definitely have a niche market. I love the look and feel of the 50's. I love retro, I love rockabilly. Don't get me wrong, I like carrying fun, extravagant shades, but I have a passion for the perfect 'staples' - those neutrals, highlighters, and liners that are a must have. I am a housewife, a homemaker, a stay at home mom - I understand the classics, and I think that that really appeals to my customers. I also believe that everyone has a right to feel beautiful, and to feel good about themselves, and I really hope that shows through in my products.

When did you first realize you wanted to sell products? :

I actually didn't start making make up with the intent to sell it, I wasn't just looking to go into business or make a quick buck. I started creating because I could not find the perfect shade of black for me. I wanted something bold, I wanted something gold, I wanted something sparkly, and I wanted it to have staying power - I just couldn't find it anywhere. So I decided to make it myself, not knowing a thing about creating cosmetics mind you. I researched everything - ingredients, how to, indie companies, everything. I finally just dived in and bought the materials. I was in Heaven! I could not get enough of learning, creating, and then learning some more. I made about 6 different shades and showed them off to my friends. They begged me to sell the shades to them. One of my best girl friends was so in lust with the products that she suggested I turn it into a business. Things sort of just took off from there. I have a shade that I created just in honor of her. I mean, I wouldn't even be a company if it wasn't for her.

For reference: 'Potty Mouth' is the black shade and 'Kink' is the one in honor of my friend.

How did you first get started? And was it an easy start or difficult? :

I touched on this in the last question, because for me the getting started and the selling aspects are so closely tied. But as far as it being easy? No even close, lol. There is so much involved in just making cosmetics for personal use, but to add in the factor of selling it? There is just so much to do and to know - are your ingredients safe, do you have everything you need, are your products tamper-proof, is everything clean and sterile, are you following FDA guidelines, etc. And that is just the creating part of it, there is so much more that is involved when you add the business part in. And the paperwork, oh my goodness, the paperwork! A good chunk of my days are spent dealing with paperwork alone =]

What advice would you offer to a seller who is looking to or just getting started? :

Know your ingredients, this is so important. I know it can be tempting to just jump into creating cosmetics - you want to make a really fun, unique and colorful product, but you have to be aware of your ingredients. I would say that my top five rules are:
1.  Educate yourself on FDA guidelines for cosmetic ingredients, labeling, etc. And research any ingredient that you are considering using and make sure that it is cosmetic grade, and where it can be used on the body.
2. Research suppliers! Yes, there is a big cosmetic supplier out there that we are all familiar with, but there are some amazing lesser-known suppliers out there too.
3. While you're at it, educate yourself in running a business. Don't be afraid to pick up a book on business, even if it's just 'Business for Dummies.' You will be so glad that you did.
4. Don't forget to set your wholesale prices before you set your retail prices, this is very important! And don't undersell your product or your work - remember that time is valuable too.
5. Never stop learning! You can always do better, you can always be better and there is always new information to be discovered. In a sense, Research, Research, Research!

What is the best thing about your fans? :

What can I say about my Bettys, except for the fact that they are amazing and I could not ask for a better group of people to share this part of my life with. They are so patient and so loyal, and they stand behind me and my product. I also have to say that they are very smart and very active in taking care of themselves. They want to know what is in their products, they want to know if the products are safe, they want to know that they can trust me, and I commend them for this. They are also really involved in my business - they love to ask questions and know what is going on. I try to make myself available to them as much as possible to answer questions, do fun activities like contests and giveaways, and sometimes even just to talk. I will say this, and your readers can take it how they may... Customers, please educate yourselves on ingredients and product safety. Check out a brand before you buy - google reviews, complaints, satisfied customers, everything. And do not be afraid to ask questions - this is your money and your body and you always have a right to know about a product before you buy it. And Sellers, when a customer gives you money in exchange for a product, it is the same thing as them saying, "I trust you," (imho). They trust us to know our products and ingredients, to make sure everything is safe, to know if a product is vegan or not, to know that their items will arrive, etc. They trust us with their health, and vision, and in some cases, they even trust us with the safety of their families and friends. And to knowingly violate that trust in any way, is totally unacceptable. Period.

What would you say if you could say one thing personally to your fans? :

RockABetty Beauty would be nowhere without you! It is your love of my products that allows me to do something that I am so passionate about, for a living. I would tell them that I love them, and that I appreciate them, more than they could ever know!

Could you tell us what is in store for your shop in the near future? Do you have any sales or specials coming soon? :

I am always testing out new products and I definitely hope to release them in the near future. A sneak peek of what's in store: Roller ball lip gloss and perfumes, pencil and liquid eyeliners, mascara, nail polish, new eyeshadow collections including, mattes, 'True Blood, and 'Ninja Death Toast,' - just to name a few ;]

Specials: I usually do a Super Sunday sale every Sunday which will save you 40% off your entire order. I also have random sales all the time, so be sure to like our fan page on Facebook, that is where I announce all sales, new products, etc.

Thank you so much, I greatly appreciate you taking the time. I just want to say as a fan “Thank You, and I wish you all of the luck in the world.”

<3

I just want to personally take the time to Thank Kimberly and Rock a Betty Beauty for taking the time to answer these questions and also for doing me the pleasure of having them on the blog. I really hope you ladies enjoyed everything, and I'm sure Kimberly will be excited to see your orders. :) Thank you all, Have a great night

Hello Readers, I come to you again with another Cosmetic Blog Review.

As some of you may know I am involved in a group called MMUL Part Duex. (Mineral Makeup Lovers) A non-judging group of women who share stories and the love for different cosmetic companies. Through there I came across a Mineral Makeup company by the name of Scaredy Cat Cosmetics. Ordered a sampler packet and here we go:

Scaredy Cat Cosmetics is a pretty amazing mineral makeup website with some awesome and vibrant colors. First thought after I checked out their website was, I can't believe how unique the packaging is. All the cosmetic jars come with a hand drawn image label specifically for that pigment. And the drawings are very well done. The labels just make the pigments that much more appealing.
Another thing I really liked was the fact that they decided to go with a cosmetic jar that you don't really see to often, kind of giving it a personal type of look.

Now after reading and looking at all of the beautiful pigments and the names, I made a list of possible colors I was interested in by color. I then proceeded to email the seller via Etsy. I got a very quick and kind response. This is something I really enjoy when I buy over Etsy. Many of us know that we want to make the best choices and the most affordable, so to have the customer work with you is pretty awesome. :)

Scaredy Cat has some pretty amazing sales, which I took advantage of when I did my blogger order. 10 sample size pigments for $10 plus shipping or 5 Sample pigments for $5 plus shipping. And a 3g pot is only $5 plus shipping. These are all super great deals! I went with the 10 for $10 so I could get a variety of choices to fully review. I ended up picking 1 color from each color category listed.

So, I put my order in on March 2nd, 2011 and within a few days ( March 5th ; 3 days ) my order had already arrived to my house. Most mineral makeup sellers have a turn around time of 5-8 days. So I was pretty excited about this. Everything came packaged and labeled nice and neatly and packed so that the product would not get damaged on the trip here. I really appreciate when sellers take the time to package safely, but also package in a personal way. It shows a lot about you as a seller.

Moving on to samples, these come in roughly 2g vials filled to the brim. Most of the time when I get samples from companies they send you not even 1g of pigment, loose in a baggy. These vials had a logo sticker on them, names of the pigments as well as a plastic stopper making sure it stays in place during travel. I was quite pleased with my samples. The only thing I would suggest is instead of vials maybe try clamshells or smaller pots. The vials make it hard to get the pigments out of, they are messy and make it unable to dip a brush in them. I ended up re-potting mine, but either way I am still pleased.

Now moving on to the 3g pots, I was even more amazed in person. These very cute 3d jars labeled perfectly with a name sticker on the bottom and an awesome custom made pigment label. It's very neat looking at all the different designs and it sort of gives it a personal touch. I personally would love to own the entire 3g pot collection even if there are colors I don't wear, just to have a neat little collection of custom made pictures.

After I got my pigments I decided to do swatches to see how well the pigments show up, how well they stay on and the overall coverage of the pigments when applied. I was quite satisfied with the results. All pigments go on smoothly with effortless application. Stay on with no smudging or fallout of glitters. All pigments were applied over Madd Style Cosmetics Foiling Serum Awesome Sauce which can be found here: http://www.etsy.com/listing/64093037/awesome-sauce-foiling-medium-vegan

Swatches and names:

As a reviewer I always like to get a little Q&A from the seller, so that you the customers can really get to know them more on a personal basis, here's what Scaredy Cat had to say:

What is the link and name for your shop/easy account:
www.etsy.com/shop/ScaredyCatCosmetics?ref=is_shop

Could you please explain a little about yourself and include any messages you would like to add?:
My name is Kelly. I'm a graphic designer, an artist, and a crafts-woman. I'm 29, married and have a beautiful daughter and we live on the outskirts of the Kansas City area.

How long have you been in business for? :
We opened up in October 2010.

What type of products do you sell? :
Right now I offer natural pigment eyeshadows. I have a long list of new natural cosmetics in the works that will be introduced over the next year.

Compared to other sellers, what do you think personally makes you stand out? :
I take a very concept oriented approach to colors. I approach each color as an individual element and develop it based on it's distinct qualities. It may be wanting to capture the essence of an enchanted forest or butterfly wing and I create the color and packaging to reflect that.

When did you first realize you wanted to sell products? :
As a child, my best friend's family owned their own business. I loved the way they all worked together to make the business work. As I grew into my own as an artist and crafts-woman that way of life seemed so.... perfect.

How did you first get started? And was it an easy start or difficult? :
It was very difficult. After graduating from college my internship was terminated early and my husband was laid off. The economy had negatively affected so many of my friends and family that I wanted to do something that would not only provide for my family, but also allow me to grow it and create jobs for others. Of course starting a business in a down economy is also very tricky, but I kept at it and eventually got some financial backing and we've been growing ever since.

What advice would you offer to a seller who is looking to or just getting started? :
Don't give up! Getting started can be hard and you're likely to run into people that turn you down or don't believe you can do it. Forget those people. Be centered in yourself, know exactly what you want to do and you can make it happen.

What is the best thing about your fans? :
My fans are amazing. Every time I see a post about how they got a compliment on their eyeshadow, or how much they enjoy a color it picks me right up. They make everything worth while.

What would you say if you could say one thing personally to your fans? :
THANK YOU! You guys have been a constant source of inspiration and encouragement. You guys rock!

Could you tell us what is in store for your shop in the near future? Do you have any sales or specials coming soon? :
There's so much in store right now. I'm waiting on some financing to go through for some really great pressed powder containers. I've also been prototyping some nail decals that are really cute. And of course I'll keep the new pigment colors coming.

I'd just like to say:
Thank you so much, I greatly appreciate you taking the time. I just want to say as a fan “Thank You, and I wish you all of the luck in the world.”

VERY happy customer. :) <3 Job well done.

I just want to say thanks for taking the time to read my review, I hope this steers you in the right direction of an amazing little shop to order from. And Thank you to Scaredy Cat Cosmetics for the time and effort put into this blog review, I appreciate it. Have a great day to all my readers! Hope you come back soon.<3

Valentine's Day

Yes, it's almost that time again. All of your boyfriends and husbands are probably out right now trying to find you the perfect gift.

I just wanted to share with you how I spent my day preparing for Valentine's Day, and it was so easy.

All you need:

Strawberries
Pretzel Rods
Potato Chips

Microwavable Chocolate (Milk and White)

Tooth Picks
Wax paper

For Strawberries: Wash and blot dry before dipping. Cut off tops and stick toothpick through strawberry. (This makes it easier to dip.) After dipping lay out on wax paper and let milk chocolate cool/harden. Afterwards put melted white chocolate in a ziplock bag and cut off the tip, drizzle over the milk chocolate and let cool. Store in fridge.

Pretzel rods : Break in half, dip in milk chocolate and lay to harden on wax paper. Drizzle white chocolate over and let harden, store in an air tight container.

Chips: Try picking out the ROUND chips, Dip in milk chocolate and lay to harden on wax paper. Store in an air tight container.
